It's Sunday....Let's Talk About the Sins of Others

No, not the 7 deadly sins
even though I think a couple of them would fit
into the topic today

There is another set of sins
which is rapidly growing
in the world today

The Six Sins of Greenwashing

First of all
What is Greenwashing?

Greenwashing is the practice of making an unsubstantiated or misleading claim about the environmental benefits of a product, service, technology or company practice.

In other words...a company lies or stretches the truth
playing on the vulnerability
of the consumer
trying to do the right thing

Greenwashing and why it is a problem

In 2007 Terra Choice released a report
uncovering the six sins of "green" marketing

99% of the over 1,000 common household products randomly reviewed
were found guilty of greenwashing.

Did you hear that?

99%

Find out who has been naughty
who has been nice

Sin of the Hidden Trade-Off

"Energy-efficient" electronics that contain hazardous materials

Sin of No Proof

Shampoos claiming to be "certified organic" but with no verifiable certification

Sin of Vagueness

Products claiming to be 100% Natural when many naturally-ocurring substances are hazardous, such as arsenic and formaldehyde

Sin of Irrelevance

Products claiming to be CFC-free, even though CFC's were banned 20 years ago

Sin of Fibbing

Products falsely claiming to be certified by an internationally recognized environmental standard like EcoLogo, Energy Star, or Green Seal
